Queensland Pool Fencing Law
In Queensland, all in-ground pools must be enclosed by a compliant pool safety barrier under the Building Act 1975 and the Queensland Development Code Part 1.4. There are no exceptions.
Your pool must have a pool safety certificate (PSC) before it can be used, sold, or leased with the property.
BCC Pool Fencing Requirements
- Minimum fence height — 1200mm from finished ground level on the non-pool side
- Non-climbable zone — no horizontal rails, footholds, or handholds within 900mm of the top of the fence on the pool side
- Gate requirements — self-closing, self-latching, opening away from the pool
- Latch position — either 1500mm from ground (both sides) or inside 900mm of pool side
- Gaps — no gaps greater than 100mm between fence panels; 100mm clearance under the fence
- Pool safety sign — current CPR sign must be mounted at the pool
Four-Sided vs. Three-Sided Fencing
Three-sided fencing (using the house as one barrier) was allowed under older regulations, but from 2010 new pools in Queensland must have four-sided barrier compliance. If you’re renovating an older pool, a pool safety inspector will assess whether your existing three-sided barrier meets current standards.
